My Leadership Development

Throughout this course we studied many different kinds of leadership styles and types. Out of the three styles of leadership: autocratic, laissez-faire and democratic, I feel that I have a democratic style where I allow others to have a participative role in making decisions. Majority of the time, I use expert power, which is one of the two types of personal power. It is where I have the capacity to influence others because I have knowledge in a specific field. I aim to be a transformational leader, where I try to be a role model for others so that they will want to achieve more and expect more from themselves.

The skills that I feel I possess being a leader is integrity, drive, creativity, and self-confidence. I have integrity, which in leadership is being honest, creditable and being consistent in exercising my values in everything that I do. This aligns similarly to ethics and being moral, since in business, there is a lot of leeway and grey areas in what is exactly "right" or "wrong". I feel that I have integrity based on the fact that I would do the "right" thing, and not do things that go against my own conscious. I have drive, where I take initiative and act on what I want to do. Creativity is one of my strongest skills, where I have a lot of original ideas and concepts. Self-confidence is also another field in skills that I possess, where I am particularly confident in my skills regarding finances, creative/art related work, and any other hands-on work.

Leadership is important to me because ever since I was young, I was brought up to be a leader. Both of my parents' occupation is in the field of business, so I was constantly brought up with a business mindset. Being a leader and having leadership is important because I believe that everyone should take the initiative and have a chance to stretch themselves to surpass their own limits. By being a leader, they are able to have the opportunity to guide others and motivate them to success. The concept of having leadership allows others to improve themselves and further their own personal development as a person. Having leadership provides the chance for essential growth as an individual where you can go beyond what you thought you could achieve and go out of your comfort zone. More importantly, leadership to me is a way for me to help others, which is something I enjoy and take pleasure in doing.

Through the Business Leadership course, my journey in learning and my knowledge about business has greatly increased. Learning about being a leader has greatly affected my views and ideas of what a true leader is. Ever since I was young, I was brought up mainly through coercive and legitimate power, which my mother would use to get my siblings and I to listen. This upbringing, affected my leadership style where I, more often than not, exerted coercive power on my brother if I wanted him to listen to me. However through learning about leading and leadership power, I gained an understanding of how to lead others without using position power to influence them. This also applies to my leadership style where I occasionally am autocratic, but with the skills and knowledge I gained through Business Leadership, I try my best to stay away from leading others, instead, to incorporating them in the decision making.

In addition to improving my leadership styles and power, the Business Leadership course also helped me gain a better understanding of myself based on a variety of self-assessments. Through these self-assessments, I found out that I am a theory Y thinker, I have an A+ personality type and I'm an accommodator. Based on these results, I have a better understanding about my personality type and who I am based on being a leader. This provides me with areas that I can easily focus on, since I know that I need improvement in them. Throughout this learning journey I am able to find out more about myself, that I would never know otherwise.
